The New York Shakespeare Workshop

ShakespeareThe New York Shakespeare Workshop is now in it’s third season. Like no other Shakespeare class in New York it gives actors the unique opportunity to participate in ensemble work that takes the actor right to the heart of the work; the kind that an actor hungers for in between jobs in order to grow and develop his or her talent.

At the New York Shakespeare Workshop we read the whole play together in a circle and enter completely into the world of the play. This happens before we get scenes up on their feet and thus better informs the actor in his process when approaching a character.

Though the focus of the workshop is always the play and getting to the truth that is revealed to us in and through it, the actors also have the opportunity to develop and strengthen their vocal ability, which becomes essential when dealing with the classical texts and the expressed length of thoughts that are often in them; and is also invaluable for working with modern texts e.g. think of the speed of thought expressed by Matt Damon in ‘Good Will Hunting’ when playing the role of the mathematical genius.

Ivy Omere’s unique experience of growing up in England, her classical training, her experiences working with multi-award winning director Michael Bogdanov in the English Shakespeare Company, her twelve years experience working as actor in both classical and modern settings, in theater, film and TV and her understanding and close contact with the acting traditions of the US through the Actors Studio place her in a special position to share this workshop.

Ivy says “My aim in this is to give actors a sense of ownership when approaching Shakespeare's texts or any text for that matter. I believe that my approach to this work equips the actor with a versatility, a sense of empowerment and a freedom to fully access, explore and express his or her unique talent and contribution to the industry. I’m simply passing on information used and handed down to me by a long line of notable British actors who are seen regularly on screen and on the stage.”
